Digital Marketing – An Internet Superpower

couple sitting on a couch at home using their tablet to look up digital marketingHave you ever needed to be in two places at once?  Like that one time, for instance, that you had a very important anniversary dinner coming up with your significant other – on the same night of the big game? Or the time that you were scheduled to work the night of your daughter’s ballet recital? Or that other time that you were supposed to be at an important meeting but were stuck in traffic? Maybe none of these scenarios apply to you specifically, but you probably can relate to the negative feelings they evoke. There are very few things in life that are more stressful than needing to be in two places at once, and many people would likely choose the ability to be in multiple places at one time as their superpower of choice.

Modern technology has not yet invented a way for people to physically be in two places at once, however, the advent of digital marketing has created a means for business owners to be everywhere at once, all the time!

A New Age of Advertising

We have news for you – television commercials are out. Like, really out. While television used to be a primary platform for marketing, customers are slowly disengaging with this archaic form of advertising. This is partially due to a desire to be in multiple places at one time. In the technological age, very few people feel content engaging with only one thing. Watching television with friends is fine… but only if we can text our other friends on our smartphones and can check our Twitter feed to make sure the world is still turning.. And when we do choose to watch television, we don’t usually watch the commercials. (Unless we’re watching the Superbowl, of course!) In fact, only 21% of consumers are known to engage with television commercials, and this number is only going to decrease with time.

Not surprisingly, the new most popular platform for customer engagement is social media.YouTube now draws in more viewers than almost every major cable source, and Instagram has a cult following of millennials. A striking 81% of customers primarily engage with companies through mobile media, and this number is getting larger with each new iPhone model that is released. Companies who seek to market their brand name in the modern age must stake their claim in this new advertising platform. Advertising has gone digital – and companies should too.
